Internships

The United Nations University (UNU) in Bonn recruits highly qualified applicants to work as interns at the different UNU entities in Bonn. Interns are recruited through a competitive application process through specific vacancy announcements or unsolicited applications for a minimum period of three months and a maximum period of six months. Enrolled students or recent graduates interested in the work of the United Nations and in particular the United Nations University are encouraged to apply.

  1. UNU-EHS Internship Programme

    The Environmental Vulnerability & Ecosystem Services Section - EVES, explores environmental deterioration processes such as water and land degradation. Particularly, the section looks at remedial measures, resources availability and robustness of ecosystem services, all within the context of socio-ecological systems affected by environmental hazards.  

    The WASCAL Project: “West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use”WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a large-scale research-focused program initiated, within the EVES section, to develop effective adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change. Its overall objective is to enhance the resilience of social-ecological systems to the impacts of climate change and increased climate variability. The geographical focus of WASCAL is on selected case study watersheds in West Africa.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct background literature searches in the context of vulnerability and risk assessment,

    • Search for secondary data from various sources

    • Compile and edit data (field data, household surveys etc.),

    • Perform data entry task in a structured access database

    • Update various excel-based templates used to summarize quantitative and qualitative reports from       secondary sources

    • Support the work of the team in spatial (GIS) data processing and analysis

    • Support the work of the team in data analysis

    • Any other duties as may be assigned or required.

  2. EGECHS/UNU-EHS internship programme

    The EGECHS section investigates the teaching – research nexus to enhance the graduate education and research training of the Institute. The section develops open educational resources on vulnerability and risk for sharing with educators, students and self-learners to use, reuse and adapt them in teaching, learning and research. The EGECHS section is a strong propionate of Information Communications Technology (ICT) development and its applications with regard to the use of new media tools and eLearning/open source methods which empower and enable users.

    Responsibilities:

    • assist in drafting and editing English documents;
    • support with administrative management processes;
    • conduct research and reference searches;
    • assist in all necessary academic and/or administrative tasks as the needs arise.

    The EGECHS section investigates the teaching – research nexus to enhance the graduate education and research training of the Institute. The section develops open educational resources on vulnerability and risk for sharing with educators, students and self-learners to use, reuse and adapt them in teaching, learning and research. Information Communications Technologies (ICT) play a key role in the activity of the section with regard to eLearning/distance education, open source technologies and new media in context WEB 2.0 technologies to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing, to enhance project work, and design and deliver learning materials. The successful candidate will:

    • Design and develop modules for content/learning management framework;

    • Support the design and development of a social networking platform;

    • Support the design and development of mobile applications;

    • Develop prototypes and evaluate technologies used for the development, based on your previous experience and knowledge in other systems;

    • Support the design of and delivery of web based educational content.

  5. UNW-DPC internship

    Under the authority of the Director of UNW-DPC and the supervision of the responsible Programme Officer, the successful candidate shall be entrusted with the following tasks:

    • Contribute to the maintenance and upgrading of the UN-Water Activity Information System (UNW-AIS);

    • Gain insight into the breadth of water-related e-learning products and services of the UN system;

    • Support the UNW-DPC team in various activities, in particular related to the UNW-DPC website, event and activity management, updating activity/participant databases and preparing input into reports and publications.
